Biographical Sketch

Walter P. Kelley, Ph.D.

Walter Paul Kelley received his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin in the area of multicultural special education. He received his B.A. degree at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and his M.A. degree at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Kelley, one of the founders of the Intertribal Deaf Council, is on its Council of Elders and has spoken on the American Indian Deaf and hard of hearing and their culture/languages at different national conferences/conventions such as the National Indian Education Association Convention, the Stabilizing Indigenous Languages Symposium (SILS), Deaf Way II, Kentucky DeaFestival, the American Deafness and Rehabilitation Association (ADARA) Conference, Deaf History International, and the National Symposium on Childhood Deafness. He has also presented papers on the need of more children's picture books on Deaf culture and history at conferences such as the American Library/Canadian Library Association Conference in Toronto and the National Symposium on Childhood Deafness in Sioux Falls.

Dr. Kelley is a member of the Society of Children Book Writers and Illustrators, the Texas Writers Association, the American Library Association, Deaf History International, the National Association of the Deaf, and other national organizations. Presently, he is a consultant working with American Indian and Hispanic families having Deaf and hard of hearing children and is a writer of stories on Deaf and Disability culture and history primarily geared for young children. Victory Week, a children's picture book on the Deaf President Now (DPN) March in Washington, DC, published by Deaf Life Press, was his first book. Deaf Culture: A to Z is his second book.
